If you want to use this package as your default system python, as root
create symbolic links like so (overwriting any previous default):
 ln -sf ${PREFIX}/bin/python2.5 ${PREFIX}/bin/python
 ln -sf ${PREFIX}/bin/pydoc2.5  ${PREFIX}/bin/pydoc

You may wish to add the following to your .emacs:

(autoload 'python-mode "python-mode" "Python Mode." t)
(add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.py\\'" . python-mode))
(add-to-list 'interpreter-mode-alist '("python" . python-mode))
